How Do You Know Your Life Needs to Change?

There are times when something in your life just doesn’t feel right. Nothing may be obviously wrong. You may have a good career, people you love, and a life you worked hard to create. Still, there is a restlessness. You find yourself wondering if something needs to change.
Our first instinct is often to figure out what that change should be. Should I leave my job? Start something new? Travel? Move? Find a new purpose? We look for clarity because we believe that once we know what needs to change, we can finally move forward.
But I’ve become curious about a different question:
How do you know your life needs to change?
Instead of immediately searching for an answer, what happens if you stay with the question for a moment? How would you describe the feeling that tells you something isn’t right? Maybe it feels like restlessness, pressure, boredom, or a sense that there should be something more. Where do you experience that feeling in your life or in your body?
And if that feeling had something to tell you, what would it say?
You might be surprised by what comes up. The restlessness may not be telling you to change your entire life. The pressure may have something to say about what you believe you should have figured out by now. What first looked like a need for change may actually be an invitation to understand something about yourself differently.
What if you don’t need the answer yet?
Try this. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Imagine yourself standing in the middle of a four-way path. You can go north, east, south, or west.
Without thinking too much about it, which direction feels exciting to you?
Now notice what you know about the direction you chose. What does it look like? How does it feel? What is different there? Maybe it feels open or spacious. Maybe there is adventure, quiet, connection, freedom, or something you don’t have words for yet.
Then ask yourself: What in my life reminds me of this direction?
This is where I get curious.
Perhaps you discover that what you are longing for isn’t a completely different life. Maybe what you really want is more space. More creativity. More time. More connection. More freedom to explore. Whatever appears belongs to you. There is no right answer.
Sometimes there is a knot between two things we want
You may also discover some tension. On one side might be your responsibilities, goals, schedules, and everything you want to accomplish. On the other might be relaxation, freedom, time, or simply enjoying your life as it is.
Imagine a knot sitting between those two sides.
There is nothing inherently wrong with either one. So rather than deciding which side is right, ask:
If the knot could tell me something about the tension between the two, what would it want me to know?
Maybe you don’t actually have to choose.
You can want something more for your life without treating your life today as something you need to get through. You can have goals without rushing. You can be curious about what comes next while also finding joy in where you are now.
This is what I mean when I talk about following the thread. We don’t begin by assuming we know what needs to change. We become curious about what you’re experiencing, follow what emerges, and listen for what the knot may be trying to show you.
Sometimes the clarity we have been pushing so hard to find begins to appear when we stop demanding an answer.
So rather than asking yourself what you need to change today, I’ll leave you with
